In short, all useful information will be gathered in this article.

Technical characteristics: zoom on the basics

Let’s get right to the heart of the matter. Regardless of the field of application of the binoculars, the first point to consider is always the technical characteristics.

1. Magnification

10 x 50 or 12 x 30 binoculars? No matter which pair of binoculars you are going to buy, you will always find this kind of indication on the product data sheet. The first number is what we call magnification coefficient. In simple terms, this is the zoom indicator. A pair of binoculars 10 x 50 will allow you to see a subject 10 times closer. A subject placed at 100 m will therefore appear as if it were only 10 m away from you.
After knowing this, you will certainly think that you need binoculars with a high magnification coefficient. Please note that binoculars with a magnification of more than 12x require the use of a tripod. Why? The effects of shaking are very important beyond a magnification of 12x. Especially if you plan to watch moving subjects. In fact, your handles will shake which will also cause the images to shake. How to choose the right magnification then?
The average magnification coefficient is 7x. This should be sufficient for all outdoor uses. Indoors, however, opt for 5x binoculars at most. To see subjects with more detail, a magnification of 10x is recommended. Currently, brands also offer binoculars with variable magnification. These are the 15-45×50, 15-45×60, etc. 15-45 means you can set your magnification from 15x to 45x.
Now you know the meaning of the first number. What about the second number?

2. Diameter of the lens

The second number indicates the diameter of the objective or more precisely the front lens of the binoculars. This number is expressed in millimeters. The quality of the image obtained with binoculars depends on the diameter of the objective. How does it work? The light enters through the lens. Therefore, the wider it is, the more luminosity there is, so the image is clear. This number should be chosen according to the place where you will use your binoculars. In a dark place, prefer binoculars with a large diameter.
Should you always choose binoculars with a large diameter? No, not necessarily. Certainly, the images are clearer with a wide lens, but on the other hand the binoculars will be heavy and cumbersome. For example, there is no need to choose a large lens if you mainly use your binoculars during the day.
In short, the size of the front lens has an impact on the handling of the binoculars. By taking this information into account, you will be able to define the type of lens that corresponds to your use. We recommend a lens between 32 and 42 millimeters for daytime use. Larger lenses are required for night observations.

3. Diameter of the eye circle or exit pupil

This diameter is obtained by dividing the diameter of the lens with the magnification coefficient. Normally, this value is between 2 and 7 millimeters. But what exactly is its meaning?
The exit pupil is the small circle of light that you can see on the back of your binoculars. On a camera, it corresponds to what is called diaphragm. The diameter of the eyepiece circle defines the maximum amount of light that can be received when looking through the binoculars. Thus, it is a factor that determines the comfort of observation.
When buying binoculars, make sure that the exit pupil has a diameter very close to that of the pupil of your eye. In general, the pupil measures about 7 mm in a child, 6 mm in an adult under 50 years of age and about 4 mm in people over 50 years of age. Consider your age to determine which diameter is best for you.
It is also worth noting that the diameter of a human’s pupil changes according to the amount of light it receives. The pupil is smaller during the day. It gets bigger at night or when there is less light. A person under the age of 50, with no eye health problems, has a pupil diameter of 2 to 3.5 mm during the day. This diameter can vary from 4 to 6 mm in the early morning and during moonlight. At night, the diameter can reach up to 7.3 mm. That said, the time of use of the binoculars is also a consideration when choosing the diameter of the eyepiece circle.

4. Twilight index and luminosity index

The following two clues are useful in determining which type of binoculars are used during the day or at night. The luminosity index is obtained by calculating the square of the diameter of the exit pupil.
For example, for 10 x 50 binoculars, the brightness index is (50/10)2 = 25. The higher this value, the more light the binoculars absorb. A pair of 7 x 50 binoculars is therefore brighter than a 10 x 50. Why? A 7 x 50 has a brightness index of 50.
As for the twilight index, it is a value to define the effectiveness of the binoculars in a place with low light or at night. To get the twilight index, calculate the root of magnification coefficient x lens diameters. A pair of binoculars 8 x 42 will have as a twilight index 18.33.

5. Field of view

Most binocular users don’t really know the meaning of this term. The field of view represents the width of the landscape that you can observe with the binoculars over a distance of 1000 m. Generally, the field of view is expressed in degrees or meters. This value depends on the magnification coefficient. Indeed, the more you zoom in, the more the field of view decreases. Therefore, you must multiply the magnification coefficient by the value of the width of field (expressed in °). If the result is greater than 64, the binoculars are part of the large-angles. A pair of 10 x 50 binoculars with a field of view of 7° therefore has a field of view of 70.

6. Focusing system

As you know, it is always necessary to focus when using an optical system. You will need to focus your binoculars according to the distance at which you will observe your subjects. There are two types of focusing systems. The most common is the central focus. The adjustment is done with a wheel or a button. The other system is the individual focus. It is often found on binoculars dedicated to water sports.

What quality of lenses to choose for binoculars?

The binoculars are all equipped with prisms inside. The role of these prisms is to offer non-inverted images to the observer. There are two types of prisms : roof prism and Porro prism. The roof prism is a newer system that allows for smaller binoculars. The Porro prism is also an older system used for the manufacture of high magnification binoculars.
The lenses used for the composition of the prisms have an important role on the quality of the images. Currently, we generally find the following lenses BK-7 with boron and glasses BaK-4 with barium. Most binocular manufacturers use BK-7 lenses. This type of glass is economically advantageous. The quality of the images obtained is satisfactory. However, BaK-4 lenses are even more effective. Moreover, BaK-4 is considered a guarantee of quality. Thus, its use impacts the price of the binoculars.
The type of glass used for the composition of the prisms is normally mentioned on the data sheet. Choose BaK-4 lenses if you want quality images. On the other hand, the BK-7 is recommended for high magnification binoculars.
There is one more important point you should know about glasses. Be aware that glass transmits a maximum of 80% of light. This affects the quality of the image, especially in terms of contrast and sharpness. Therefore, it is necessary to apply a treatment on the glasses. But how does it work?
Manufacturers now apply an anti-reflective coating to the lenses to facilitate light penetration. Hence the terms you may often encounter such as: fully multicoated, multicoated, fully coated or coated. We recommend glass with a multi-layer or fully milticoated coating. And avoid untreated glass whenever possible.

Which binoculars to choose if you wear glasses?

Eyeglass wearers must pay attention to one criterion to have a better comfort of use. This is what we call “eye clearance”. To keep it simple, choose binoculars with more than 15 mm of eye relief. It should be noted that the information on this eye clearance is not always mentioned by the manufacturer on the product data sheet. Indeed, most users do not attach importance to this criterion.
There are also binoculars with adaptable eyecups. This kind of binoculars can help you if you wear glasses. In fact, this system allows you to adjust the positioning of your eye in relation to the eyepiece of the binoculars. In general, the adjustment of these eyelets differs from brand to brand. Some manufacturers offer intermediate positions and others do not. Nevertheless, almost all high performance binoculars have adaptable eyecups.

Top of the range, top of the range or middle of the range…

The choice of the range generally depends on your budget. Brands always try to offer products in every range. Nikon for example offers top of the line and top of the line binoculars. There are several brands that do the same such as Zeiss, Bushnell, Steiner, etc.
In fact, the difference between the ranges is mainly in price. Entry-level binoculars cost around €400 to €600 or less. When choosing these binoculars, always refer to the reputation of the brand. Try browsing user reviews of a product before putting it in the cart. High-end binoculars also cost about 1000 € for the 10 x 50 models. Finally, the top of the range binoculars are offered beyond 1500 €. These are products adapted to professionals.
Normally, the overall quality of the products does not change for a brand whether the binoculars are high, mid or top of the range. Only the options change. For this reason, we recommend that you compare the models available within your budget.

Where to buy binoculars?

Several e-commerce sites sell binoculars. You can easily find good binoculars on Cdiscount, eBay or Amazon. We have decided to present you only the famous sites. However, we have a preference for Amazon. By the way, the products we are going to present you are on sale on Amazon.

The different types of binoculars

After knowing all these characteristics, it is time to choose the binoculars according to the activity. Indeed, all these points have been addressed so that you can easily understand which type of binoculars will suit your activity. We will see all types of binoculars that exist on the market

1. Binoculars for safari

Going on safari allows you to observe animals in their natural environment. Sometimes, it is difficult to see them. In order not to miss any opportunity, you must bring a good pair of binoculars. Many people make the mistake of thinking that for a safari you need a pair of high magnification binoculars. This idea is wrong, because we have already seen that high magnification has an impact on the handling of binoculars. You will never have time to set up your tripod for every observation. Most of the time, the animals are on the move. It is also not uncommon for you to be in a moving car during your observation sessions.
Opt for a 7x or 8x in terms of magnification. What about the size of the lens? Since safaris are usually conducted in daylight, you won’t need a very wide lens. Try to choose a lens that offers clear and sharp images. Note the following numbers: 32, 30, 28 or 25. One of these 4 lenses is sufficient for safari binoculars. As far as weight is concerned, opt for binoculars that weigh about 600 g.
We have selected for you three safari binoculars.

Nikon is a great brand that needs no introduction in the world of optics. The brand offers several types of safari binoculars, but we decided to present the NIKON A211 7×35. The reason is simple: this product offers a good quality/price ratio.
You may wonder if 7×35 is enough for safari observations? Obviously, this pair of binoculars is more or less small, but very accurate. In fact, its lenses are equipped with a multi-coating which allows to obtain very bright images. In addition, its field of view is 9.3°. It is therefore among the wide-angle binoculars. With an exit pupil of 5 mm, it is well suited for daytime use.
Concerning the grip, the sheathing of this NIKON A211 is rubberized which offers an excellent ergonomics.

Points forts
  • Very ergonomic;
  • Also suitable for birdwatching;
  • Excellent value for money.
Inconvénients
  • Fragile lens caps;
  • Not very suitable for women with small hands;
  • A bit heavy.

2. Birding binoculars

Do you love to go on birding trips? A good pair of binoculars is essential. Indeed, you will need binoculars allowing you to see the birds moving in the sky or hidden in the trees. The first criterion to consider is the magnification.
We recommend binoculars with a magnification factor of 8x – 10x. Be aware that binoculars with 8x magnification offer better image quality. The results are stable and you will benefit from a large field of view. But if you want more detail, buy 10x binoculars. However, do not exceed this value, because beyond 10x you will start to feel the instability. This may affect your observation.
The second criterion is the size of the lens. The 42 mm and 50 mm are very popular in birding. This diameter is sufficient to offer you a nice observation experience. Another factor is not to be underestimated in ornithology: the twilight index. Indeed, you will often have to observe birds at dusk. It is therefore ideal to have binoculars with a twilight index greater than or close to 20. Finally, also pay attention to the focusing system. A delay in adjustment could have an impact on your observation. Choose binoculars equipped with quick focus.
We have selected for you three binoculars for birdwatching.

If you want to make your child happy by buying binoculars, you should choose them in a different way. The first selection criterion is the age recommended by the manufacturer. Binoculars for children have special technical features that vary according to age. Therefore, compliance with the recommendations is of great importance if you want your child to have a great viewing experience.
Next, note that the weight can impact the grip of the binoculars. Choose lightweight binoculars, as children are less resistant to fatigue than adults. Regarding the technical characteristics, a magnification between 2x and 8x is sufficient. Never give your child high-magnification binoculars, as this may impact the health of their eyes. And most importantly, avoid giving adult binoculars to your little ones. Finally, the ideal lens diameter is less than 30 mm.
To make your purchase easier, we have selected for you three binoculars for children.

5. Night vision binoculars

Here is a type of binoculars a little more complex to choose. In fact, night vision binoculars have different functions than other binoculars. They will allow you to see the subjects in more detail during the day. They also offer you the ability to see at night or in dark places. But how does it work?
At night, infrared and light from the moon or stars penetrate the lens. The protons will then be transformed into electrodes. An electronic system amplifies these electrodes to give flashes. And it is these flashes that create a bright and clear image. Therefore, night vision binoculars are equipped with a battery or a battery for the electronic part.
First, choose according to your use. Night vision binoculars tend to be more expensive than other types of binoculars. Thus, it is useless to spend in 2500 € binoculars if you are going to use it in a non professional context.
Today, the system used by night vision binoculars has evolved a lot. There are 4 generations on the market. The first version is widely available on the Internet. These are binoculars intended for leisure activities such as airsoft. The second generation is ideal for people who love to watch animals at night. The third generation is designed for hunters and security guards. Finally, there is the fourth generation which is very expensive, but of very high quality.
Now let’s go into detail about the important features to know. First of all, it is necessary for you to know that night vision binoculars do not have a large magnification coefficient. Beyond 6x, the images start to lose quality, especially in terms of clarity. We recommend 3x to 5x binoculars.
As usual, we bring you our top three night vision binoculars.

    6. Hunting binoculars

Hunting has been attracting more and more people in recent years. Are you one of these people? So you know that binoculars are among the essential accessories for this activity. His choice is not to be taken lightly. How to do it then?
A magnification between 7x and 10x is sufficient. Do not look for high magnification binoculars to avoid the impact on the comfort of use. As we keep saying, a large magnification factor causes tremors. The diameter of the lens must not exceed 42 mm. Choose either a 40 mm or a 42 mm. Beyond 42 mm, the lens is heavy and this will affect the handling of the binoculars. We recommend multi-coated lenses to avoid glare and also to make the images clearer.
You should also choose binoculars with a wide field of view. You’ll notice during your hunting trip that this is something to take seriously in order to track moving targets. On the other hand, keep in mind that the better the binoculars, the heavier they are. High-end hunting binoculars can reach up to 1 kg or more. This is a factor not to be overlooked if you are hunting all day.
Here is a comparison of three hunting binoculars to make your purchase easier.

Theater binoculars or opera binoculars are grouped under one name: indoor binoculars. This is a type of binoculars specially designed for indoor shows or events. Since the existence of theater, binoculars have always been considered a sign of elegance. The design, the color and the style are to be chosen according to your personality. Here are the technical characteristics to be taken into account:
Theater binoculars are used to enjoy a show. We recommend low magnification binoculars. Generally, opera glasses have a magnification of 3x to 5x. The rule is simple, the magnification factor should not exceed 5x. Indeed, you don’t need to see the details on the scene. In fact, it is so rare that you use the zoom function of your theater scope.
In addition to the magnification, choose binoculars with a wide field of view. This would allow you to observe the whole scene and not just a part of it. We recommend binoculars with a field of view between 100 – 1000 m.
Normally, these two criteria should be enough to choose your theater binoculars.
We’ve chosen three theatrical twins for you:
